Scattered correspondence and financial records of William T. Justis [sic], Joseph Allen Elder, and Henry Milton Cheely, partially collected by R. Anna Justis Cheely, wife of Henry Milton Cheely, sister of Louisa Justice, and daughter of William T. Justis. William T. Justis was a landholder in Brunswick, Lunenburg, and Nottoway counties, Va., and his papers concern settlement of estates, payment of property taxes (for land and slaves), purchase of merchandise mainly from Petersburg, Va., the sale of tobacco, and hiring of slaves owned by others. Joseph Allen Elder was from Wattsboro, Lunenburg County, Va. and served in North Carolina and Virginia in Company G, 18th Virginia Infantry Regiment, Confederate States Army and wrote love letters to Louisa Justis, until his death at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. The last correspondent, Henry Milton Cheely, was married to R. Anna (Justis) Cheely, and was a landholder in Brunswick County, Va. His papers mainly consist of financial records concerning payment of county real and personal property taxes; purchase in Lunenburg and Nottoway counties and Petersburg, Va., of general merchandise, livestock, agricultural machinery, and an automobile; and the sale of tobacco. Later generations of the family changed the spelling of Justis to Justice and Cheely to Cheeley.
